This dress started as something completely different. I originally designed it as an oversized summer top with these beautiful spike details on the hem. But as I was working through the construction, I realized the body was too short to really show off those spikes. Instead of scrapping the design, I decided to keep going and extend it into a dress. And honestly? It was the best decision. The longer length gives those spikes room to breathe and really shine. Now that I look back, I'm so glad the top didn't work out the way I planned.
The construction
The Blush Ruffle Summer Dress is built from two panels, a front bust and a back bust. You start by shaping a gorgeous V-neckline on the front, then connect both shoulders and work the back panel. Once the bust is complete, you join everything together and work the body downward in the round. This is where the magic happens. You have six strategic increase points that create those beautiful spikes on the hem. After the body, you add a border, work the ruffle at the bust, close up the sleeves, and finish with the neckline. It looks complex, but every step is surprisingly satisfying to make.
Made to measure
One thing I love about this pattern is that it's completely made to measure. You're not limited to one size or stuck with a pattern that doesn't quite fit your body. You take your own measurements, adjust the pattern to your fit, and end up with a dress that was literally made for you. Every measurement adjusts: the bust, the neckline depth, the body length. No matter your size, the dress will fit perfectly. This is what makes made-to-measure patterns so special. It's not a one-size-fits-all situation. It's YOUR size, YOUR fit, YOUR dress.
How to style it
The best part about this dress? It's sheer, which means you have so many ways to style it. I love wearing it over pink shorts for that cute, casual summer vibe. You can also wear it over a slip, tights, or a bodysuit depending on the season or your mood. The flowy silhouette and that beautiful ruffle detail at the bust work with so many different looks. Whether you're heading to the beach, running errands, or just want to feel cute and comfortable, this dress adapts to however you want to wear it.
