Cherry Blossom Babydoll Summer Dress

Cherry Blossom Babydoll Summer Dress

I've been thinking a lot about pockets lately. Not the ones you forget are there. The ones that matter. This dress starts fitted at the bust in double crochet, structured, intentional, and then opens up into cherry blossom stitch on the body. That stitch is airy. Genuinely airy. But here's what makes this design different: the pockets don't hide. They're built into the sides, and they actually shape the silhouette. Without them, this would just be a loose, drooping A-line. With them, you get volume. You get definition. You get a dress that has presence.

How the construction works

Start at the bust. Double crochet for that fitted top, it sits close to your body, gives you anchor points for the straps. Then as you move down into the body, you switch into cherry blossom stitch and the fabric starts to expand. The pockets are worked in, creating structured space at the sides that pushes the skirt out gently. It's not accidental fullness. It's designed fullness. The only specialty stitch here is the cherry blossom itself, and once you understand the pattern repeat, your hands take over. Advanced beginner level, which means if you've made a few crochet tops, you're ready for this.

Why airy matters, and how to wear it

Cherry blossom stitch is almost lace-like. It breathes. It moves. And yes, it's see-through in the way that beautiful, open stitches are. So wear whatever makes you feel comfortable underneath: shorts, a slip, just underwear, nothing at all 🙂. I personally reach for shorts because I like the freedom to move without thinking about it. Lift your legs, sit however you want, cross your legs on a terrace without worrying about visibility. But that's my comfort, not a requirement. You decide what works for your body and your mood that day.

Pockets that you'll actually use

My community has been asking for pockets for a while now, and I hear you. There's nothing worse than making a beautiful dress only to realize you have nowhere to put your keys, your phone, a lipstick. These pockets are functional and real. Put your hands in them. Carry things. They're not decorative, they're part of how this dress is built.

Made to measure

Hold the dress up as you go. The length is yours to decide. The width is yours to decide. Smaller frame, larger frame, different proportions, gauge isn't critical here because you're building it around your actual body, not a chart.
