Crochet Cropped Bishop Sleeve Sweater

A cropped sweater that fits YOUR body. The ribbed waist cinches in, the V-stitch bust drapes perfectly, and the wide neckline adjusts however you want to wear it. Every measurement is customizable.

Made-to-measure construction

This pattern guides you through measuring and adjusting as you work. No standard sizing charts. No hoping it fits. You make it to your measurements.

Construction method

You'll make two panels — front and back — working sideways for the waist, then up for the bust. The sleeves work the same way: ribbed cuffs, then V-stitch body.

  • Waist section: Double crochet worked in back loops only creates ribbing that cinches at your natural waist. Working sideways means your foundation chain determines the height, and you work rows until it wraps around your body.
  • Bust section: Pick up stitches along the waist edge and work V-stitch rows. The increases from the V-stitch create the gathered, drapey fabric that makes the bust oversized while the waist stays fitted.
  • Sleeves: Same construction as the body — ribbed cuff, then V-stitch sleeve. The pattern walks you through checking the length as you go.

The V-stitch drape

The V-stitch (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) creates an open, airy fabric. When you work a V-stitch in each stitch across, you're essentially increasing with every stitch. That's what creates the gathered, wrinkly look that relaxes into beautiful drape.

The fabric looks bunched up while you're working it — that's exactly what's supposed to happen. Once it's on your body, it drapes and flows.

Assembly

  • Seam the shoulders with slip stitch
  • Attach the sleeves
  • Seam the sides and sleeve seams in one continuous line

The video tutorial shows exactly how to position and pin everything so the sleeves sit centered on your shoulders.

The wide neckline is adjustable — mark it wherever you want. Wear it straight across for a boat neck look, or make it wider so it slips off the shoulder.

Styling

This works year-round:

  • Summer: Over tanks, camisoles, or slip dresses
  • Fall/Winter: Layer over turtlenecks, long-sleeve basics, or button-downs
  • Spring: With high-waisted jeans and a cropped fit

The V-stitch keeps it lightweight enough for layering without bulk. The cropped length hits at the natural waist, making it perfect with high-waisted bottoms.
