Cute Crochet Laptop Case

Cute Crochet Laptop Case

I spend a lot of time working outside with my Mac. I'd throw it in my bag along with everything else - my wallet, my keys, all the stuff that ends up in there - and my laptop was just sitting against everything with nothing protecting it. I kept thinking about how risky that felt. One bump, one sharp corner from something in the bag, and something could go wrong.

So I decided to make a case for it.

What started as a practical need turned into something I actually love carrying around. Now my laptop has its own little space in my bag, protected from everything else I'm throwing in there. The moss stitch creates this dense, sturdy fabric that genuinely protects it, and the flower closure is just charming. Now when I grab my bag and head outside to work, my laptop is safe.

How it's built

The case is a rectangle worked flat in moss stitch using two colors. You just chain for the width you need, work rows until you've got the length to cover your laptop, then fold it in half and seam the sides together. The top opening gets a quick round of single crochet to finish it neatly.

Then comes the fun part - a little flower with two leaves and a stem. The stem wraps around the flower like a tie to keep everything closed. It's simple but it works perfectly, and honestly, it's the detail that makes the whole thing feel special.

Why moss stitch

The moss stitch creates a flat, dense fabric with a beautiful textured look. It's a one-row repeat, so once you understand the pattern, it becomes meditative to work. The three-color version shows off that texture even more - the alternating colors create this classic woven effect that just looks intentional and handmade.

Made to measure

This is a made-to-measure pattern, which means you're not choosing from a size chart. You're measuring your own laptop and making it fit exactly. Want it to cover the whole laptop or just most of it? Your choice. Making it for a tablet instead? Same pattern, different measurements. Phone case, pencil case, book sleeve - the construction stays the same. You just adjust.

What you'll need

Sport weight cotton yarn - I used Omoiut Milk Cotton in Snow White, Light Grey, Grey, Army Green, and Red, but any yarn works. You'll only need small amounts of each color, which makes this perfect if you've got scraps sitting around. A 3.0 mm hook (or go down a size or two from your yarn's recommendation to get a firmer fabric), a yarn needle, and scissors.

Video tutorial

If you prefer to follow along visually, I've got a full step-by-step video tutorial on YouTube that walks you through the whole process.

The pattern

The written pattern walks you through everything - chaining the right width, working the moss stitch rows, checking your fit before you seam, making the flower and leaves, and attaching it all together.

This pattern is completely free on the blog.

Difficulty

Basic.

Materials

Yarn

A: Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn; Color: Snow White; 100% Cotton; Yarn Weight: Sport weight

B: Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn; Color: Light Grey; 100% Cotton; Yarn Weight: Sport weight

C: Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn; Color: Grey; 100% Cotton; Yarn Weight: Sport weight

D: Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn; Color: Army Green; 100% Cotton; Yarn Weight: Sport weight

E: Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn; Color: Red; 100% Cotton; Yarn Weight: Sport weight

This is the yarn I used, but you can work with any yarn. This is a perfect stash buster - small amounts of each color are all you need. For reference, my laptop case used approximately 150g total.

Every stitch deserves the right yarn 🧶 I've gathered some of my favorite yarns & tools here 🤎 https://a.co/d/02toT06o (affiliate link - as an Amazon Associate, I may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you)

Hook(s)

  • 3.0 mm

Use the hook size recommended for your yarn, or go down a size or two to get a firmer, sturdier fabric. You want the case to hold its shape and protect your laptop, not be too soft and floppy.

Other

  • Yarn needle, scissors

Gauge

Not critical. Your hook size and yarn weight will determine the final size of your case.

Finished measurements

The case is made to fit your laptop. You'll adjust the measurements based on your device.

Flower: approx. 6 cm / 2.4 in wide — based on sport weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. Your results will vary depending on the yarn you choose.

Specialty stitch

Moss stitch

Explained in the pattern instructions.

Stitch key (US terms)

  • ch/s = chain/s

  • dc = double crochet

  • hdc = half double crochet

  • RS = right side

  • sc = single crochet

  • sk = skip

  • slst = slip stitch

  • sp/s = space/s

  • st/s = stitch/es

  • tc = treble crochet

Notes

  • This pattern includes a full video tutorial linked on the front page for steps that are easier to show than tell.

  • This case is worked flat as a rectangle, folded in half, and seamed along the sides. The flower and leaves are made separately and attached to finish.

Use it for

This pattern is written for a laptop case, but the construction works for so much more. Once you know your measurements, you can use the same method to make a tablet case, e-reader cover, phone case, pencil case, makeup pouch, sunglasses case, book sleeve, or a small clutch. If it fits in a rectangle, you can make it with this pattern.

Instructions

Panel

Chain an even number of chs, to create the width you need for your laptop.

Row 1: Working into the back bumps of the ch, sc into the 4th ch from the hook. Repeat *ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc into next ch* across.

If you are changing colors, be sure to attach new yarn in the last st of the row.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Sc in the ch 1 sp from the previous row. Repeat *ch 1, sk sc from previous row, sc in ch 1 sp from the previous row* across.

End with your final sc in the turning chain space at the end of the row.

If you are changing colors, be sure to attach new yarn in the last st of the row.

Repeat Row 2 until you reach the desired length. I made mine 2.5 cm / 1 in shorter than my laptop so the top peeks out slightly, but you can make it long enough to cover the laptop fully - it's entirely up to you.

Finish off.

Assembly

RS facing, fold the panel in half and seam both sides using slst.

RS facing, attach the yarn at either side seam at the top opening. Ch 1 and work 1 round of sc in every st around the top opening. Slst in the 1st st to join.

Flower

Work with color E, red.

Ch 3 (or magic ring and ch 2).

Round 1: Work 6 dc into the 3rd ch from the hook. Slst to the top of the 1st dc to join.

Round 2: Ch 2 and work 3 dc flo into the 1st st. Ch 2, slst flo into the next st (1st petal complete). *Ch 2, 3 dc flo into the same st, ch 2, slst flo into the next st* in the remaining 5 stitches.

You should have 6 petals at the end of this round.

Round 3: Slst into the back loop of the 1st st, *ch 2, 4 tc into the same st, ch 2, slst into the next st* into every back loops around.

Finish off and attach the flower on the front side of the case.

Leaf (make 2)

Work with color D, army green.

Ch 8.

Round 1: 1 dc into 3rd ch from the hook, 2 tc into next ch, 1 dc into next ch, 1 hdc into next ch, 1 sc into next ch, slst into next ch, ch 1, working into other side of ch sts, slst into next ch, 1 sc into next ch, 1 hdc into next ch, 1 dc into next ch, 2 tc into next ch, 1 dc into next ch, ch 2, slst into same ch as last dc.

Ch as many chs as you need to create a stem long enough to wrap around the flower as a tie. Slst to the back of the case to attach.

Finish off.

Once you’re done with the 2nd leaf, attach it in the same st as the 1st leaf.
