November is accessory month around here, and for good reason. We need them to keep warm. They're short projects you can finish in a weekend, sometimes even in a few hours. And with December knocking on the door, they make perfect gifts for the people you love. There's something special about handing someone a handmade scarf instead of another store-bought thing. This month, I'm focusing on accessories that are actually worth your time to make.
A new technique (that's easier than it looks)
The Ember Plaid Scarf uses a weaving technique that might look complicated, but stick with me—it's surprisingly simple.
Here's how it works: You crochet the base using just double crochet stitches, changing colors as you go to create horizontal stripes. That's the easy part, and honestly, it's relaxing. Just rows of double crochet while you watch something or wind down.
Then comes the part that transforms it: weaving. You cut long strands of yarn and weave them vertically between the stitches. Over, under, over, under. The strands go in, and suddenly you have a plaid pattern.
It's not hard. It's just different. And that's what makes it interesting. The result is dimensional texture—those vertical woven strands sit on top of your crocheted base, creating depth and that classic plaid look. It's the kind of detail that makes people ask, "Wait, how did you do that?"
I walk you through the entire process in my YouTube tutorial. Even if you've never done this before, you'll be able to follow along.
Why this works as a gift
Plaid feels timeless. It doesn't scream "handmade" in that overly crafty way. It looks intentional. Polished. Like something they'd actually wear.
And because you're working with thinner yarn held double, the scarf has drape without being heavy. The fringe at the ends (created by those woven strands) adds movement and finish.
I used leftover yarn for mine—metallic, rust, and beige. Yarn A was slightly thinner than the others, but it worked fine. You can use yarns of the same weight if you prefer. The pattern is forgiving that way.
Make it this month
If you're looking for a project that's quick, giftable, and teaches you something new, this is it. The weaving technique opens up a whole new way to add texture and pattern to your crochet without complicated stitches.
