Garden Tote Bag

Garden Tote Bag

A gathered tote bag that's equal parts practical and charming. The Garden Tote Bag features a sturdy construction and playful puff flowers circling the opening - perfect for market trips, beach days, or everyday errands.

Why this construction works

This bag starts as a flat rectangular piece and transforms into a rounded, gathered tote through a simple increase-and-decrease technique. Work a sturdy front border, triple your stitches to create the body width, work straight rows for length, then gather everything back down with decreases before finishing with a back border.

The construction creates natural gathering that gives the bag its distinctive shape without complicated shaping or calculations. Once you add the handles and border rounds, the structure comes together beautifully.

Made-to-measure approach

This pattern uses a made-to-measure approach, which means you control the final size. The pattern includes measurements for the sample bag, but you can easily customize:

  • Front border width: Adjust the foundation chain to make the bag narrower or wider (example: 15cm for smaller, 25cm for larger).
  • Body length: Work more or fewer rows to create a deeper or shallower bag (example: 60cm for smaller, 80cm for larger).
  • Handle length: Chain more or fewer stitches for your preferred handle drop
This flexibility means you can create exactly the bag you need - whether that's a compact everyday tote or a roomy market bag.

Working with fine weight cotton

The pattern uses fine weight cotton, which creates a sturdy fabric that doesn't need lining. The key is using a smaller hook than you might typically use for this yarn weight; this creates a dense, structured fabric that can handle real-world use.

The sample uses a 3.5mm hook for the body, but you can adjust based on your yarn choice. The important thing is creating a fabric with minimal gaps so your groceries don't peek through.

Adding the puff flowers

The puff flowers are what make this bag special. They're worked separately using scrap yarn, then attached around the opening. The pattern includes guidance on sizing the flowers proportionally to your bag - larger bags can handle bigger flowers, while smaller bags look better with more delicate blooms.

I used worsted and sport weight yarn for the flowers, but you can use any weight. Make a test flower first to check the proportions, and adjust your hook size as needed.
The flowers use a simple puff stitch technique worked in rounds around a magic ring. Each flower takes just a few minutes to make, and you'll need approximately 30-35 flowers to circle the opening (adjust based on your bag size).

Assembly and handles

Once your main piece is complete, the handles are worked continuously around the opening. You'll chain for the handle length, attach it to the opposite side, then work single crochet along the side edges before chaining for the second handle.

The clever part is working continuous rounds around both handles and the opening edge. This thickens the handles for comfort and creates a finished border around the bag opening in one step. Work as many rounds as you want; more rounds mean thicker, more substantial handles.

Styling your garden tote

This bag works for so many occasions:

  • Market days: The sturdy construction and roomy interior make it perfect for produce, flowers, and all your market finds.
  • Beach trips: Cotton dries quickly and can handle sandy towels and damp swimsuits.
  • Everyday errands: Use it as your go-to bag for groceries, library books, or whatever your day brings.
  • Statement piece: Those puff flowers make this more than just a practical bag - it's a conversation starter.

The neutral cappuccino base means it goes with everything, while the colorful flowers add personality without being overwhelming.
