Granny Square Summer Dress

Granny Square Summer Dress

I've always loved the granny square. It's rhythmic, meditative, and endlessly expandable. One afternoon I held a finished square up against myself and thought: what if I just kept going? What if the square was the dress?

The concept

Two identical granny squares, one front, one back. Seam the shoulders, leave space for the neckline. Seam the sides, leave space for the armholes. Finish with a treble crochet ruffle border and you're done.

What I love most about this construction is that it removes the anxiety that usually comes with garment making. No size chart. No shaping. You just hold it up against your body as you go and stop when it feels right. The longer you make the square, the wider the shoulders, so length and fit are decided together, naturally.

Any yarn, any size

I crocheted my sample in Rainbow Deluxe 8/4 cotton in Winter Wheat, but the pattern works with anything in your stash. Gauge isn't critical. This is truly made to measure. You measure yourself, you crochet, you try it on.

The stitch repeat becomes familiar quickly, and the ruffle hem is the kind of finishing detail that makes the whole thing come alive. Simple to work, beautiful in the end.
