Maven Crossbody Purse

Maven Crossbody Purse

The bag that looks boutique-bought

A structured crossbody purse made entirely in single crochet. No fancy stitches, just cotton rope, tight tension, and a construction method that creates a polished bag worth every bit of effort.

Why this works

Single crochet throughout might sound basic, but when you work with sturdy cotton rope and use a hook smaller than recommended, you create dense fabric that holds its shape. No lining needed, no interfacing required.

The sample uses 3mm recycled cotton rope with a 6.5mm hook (recommended hook is 7.0mm). This creates fabric sturdy enough for daily use while keeping the bag lightweight.

Made-to-measure approach

This pattern lets you control the final size. The pattern includes measurements for the sample bag (27cm wide × 18cm tall when folded, 7cm deep), but you can customize:

  • Body dimensions: Chain more/fewer stitches for different width, work more/fewer rows for different height

  • Side panels: Adjust the starting width to change the bag's depth

  • Handle length: Foundation slip stitch handle works to exactly the length you need

Construction method

You'll make three pieces: the main body, two side panels, and the handle.

  • Body: Work a simple rectangle in rows, then shape the flap with a single decrease row. This creates the angled closure.
  • Side panels: Start narrow (4cm) and increase to create depth (~7cm after increases). These attach to the body to form the bag's three-dimensional shape.
  • Handle: Foundation slip stitch creates a cord-like strap. The pattern includes detailed instructions for learning the stitch.

Assembly

Curve the body panel along the edges of the side pieces and seam with single crochet worked through both layers. The video tutorial shows exactly how to position and attach everything for clean seams.

Add magnetic snap buttons for the closure and finish with a tassel (tutorial included in the video).

What you'll need

Materials:

  • Recycled cotton rope, 3mm, approximately 500g

  • 6.5mm crochet hook

  • 2 magnetic buttons

  • Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers

Skill level: Easy - Projects may include simple stitch patterns, color work, and/or shaping.

Time: Most crocheters finish in 5-10 hours.

Styling

This bag works for daily errands, evening outings, or travel. The crossbody style keeps hands free, and the structured design means it holds phone, wallet, keys, and essentials without losing its shape.

The dense cotton rope construction makes it durable enough for real life while maintaining that polished, boutique look.
