Puff Stitch Granny Square

Puff Stitch Granny Square

This is the granny square I'm using for my next summer top.

The structure alternates between puff stitch rounds and extended half double crochet rounds. The puff stitches create raised, textured clusters that open the fabric up, and the extended half double crochet rounds pull it back together and give the square its shape.

How it's built

You start from a center ring and work the first four rounds to establish the square. From round 2 onward it's a simple three-round repeat that you just keep going until the square reaches whatever size you need.

Yarn and hook

Any yarn works for this square: cotton, linen, acrylic, whatever you have. Just use the hook size recommended for your yarn. The square will look different depending on the weight you choose, which is actually part of the fun.

Instructions

Puff stitch (PS)

Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull up a loop in the same st (5 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull up a loop in the same st (7 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through all 7 loops on the hook, chain 1 to secure the stitch.

Extended half double crochet (ehdc)

Yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through one loop, yarn over and pull through the remaining three loops.

What's coming next

I'm using this square to build a summer top, which I'll be releasing soon. So if you want a head start, make a few of these now. You'll need them. 🌿
