Returning to a Stitch I Loved

Sometimes a new design begins with a completely new idea. Other times, it begins with something I already made and still haven’t stopped thinking about.

That was the case with the Puff Stitch Sweater.

The idea came from my Puff Sweater Dress. I loved the texture of that dress—the chunky puff stitches made the whole piece feel soft, cozy, and much more complicated than it actually was. I knew I wanted to return to the same stitch, but this time I wanted to turn it into a sweater.

The Same Stitch, a New Design

Although the stitch is the same, the Puff Stitch Sweater has its own shape and feeling.

I gave it an open neckline that can sit across the shoulders, wide sleeves, and snug ribbing to balance the loose puff-stitch fabric. The alternating rows of three colors bring attention to every puff and make the texture the main feature of the sweater.

For this version, I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn. The recommended crochet hook for this yarn is 5.5 mm, but I used a 4 mm hook for the ribbing and an 8 mm hook for the body and sleeves. That difference is intentional—the smaller hook keeps the ribbing firm, while the larger hook creates a softer, more open fabric.

You can use any yarn for this sweater. Make a swatch first and experiment with your hook sizes until you create a fabric you like.

Made to Fit Your Body

The sweater is made in separate pieces. You will crochet the front panel, followed by the back panel and two sleeves. The pieces are then joined before the neckline is added.

This is a made-to-measure crochet pattern, so you don’t need to choose a size from a standard chart. Instead, the pattern guides you through using your own measurements to decide the width and length of each piece.

For my size small sweater, I used approximately 450 g (15.9 oz), or 756 m (827 yd), of yarn. The amount you need will vary depending on your measurements and the length you choose.
