Finally, a Project Worth Saving Your Scraps For
I don't know about you, but I've always had a hard time throwing yarn away.
Every little leftover ball feels like it could become something one day. So I keep it. Then another project ends, another leftover joins the pile, and before I know it, I have a basket full of beautiful colors that somehow never seem to get used.
This dress came from that basket.
I wanted to create something that didn't ask you to buy more yarn. Instead, I wanted a project that celebrates what you already have. The result is the Scrap Yarn Granny Dress - a colorful, oversized summer dress made almost entirely from leftover yarn.

One of my favorite parts of making this dress was choosing the colors. If you've followed me for a while, you probably know I'm usually quite careful about color combinations. This time, I decided to let go of that completely. I mixed colors I normally wouldn't put together, and somehow they all worked. That's the fun of this project. The more variety you have, the more personality your dress gets.
The dress is made by crocheting individual granny squares, joining them into two panels, adding straps, and finishing the armholes and hem with a simple decorative border. Optional pockets complete the design if you'd like a little extra functionality.
Like all of my made-to-measure patterns, this one is designed to fit your body instead of a standard size chart. The written pattern walks you through calculating the size of your granny squares based on your own measurements, so you can easily customize both the width and the length.
For my sample, I used approximately 500 g (17.6 oz) of Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn, but this project works beautifully with any yarn. Since it's made from scraps, it's also a great opportunity to combine leftovers from previous projects into something completely new.
