The backless crop top is what you get when you are searching for an easy-to-make summer top that works up super fast. It’s great for the summer weather. It’s very beginner friendly and a very easy pattern.

Specialty Stitch & Technique Key

FOUNDATION DOUBLE CROCHET

STEP 1: Ch 2

STEP 2: Yarn over and insert your hook into the first chain.

STEP 3: Yarn over and draw up a loop.

STEP 4: Yarn over and draw yarn through the first loop on your hook.

STEP 5: Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook.

STEP 6: Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on your hook.

STEP 7: Yarn over and insert your hook under both loops of the base of the previous stitch (the chain you created in Step 4).

STEP 8: Yarn over and pull up a loop.

STEP 9: Yarn over and pull through 1 (like you did in Step 4), yarn over, and pull through 2 twice (as you did in Steps 5 and 6).

Keep repeating steps 7-9 to grow your foundation double crochet row.

Notes

  • The top is made of  front panel and  back panel.
  • If you want the top to be longer just add rows to the front and back panel, but don’t add too many rows because the top is meant to be cropped and will lose its shape if you add too many rows.
  • It’s crochet from bottom to top.
  • Use a 4 mm hook unless it says otherwise.
  • Ch 2 doesn’t count as a stitch
  • Use a larger hook size around the neck if needed. The edge could be much smaller after making two rounds of sl sts around the neck.
  • I recommend you watch my YouTube tutorial if there are any uncertainties
  • Foundation double crochet (fdc) does not count as a row.

Instructions

Front panel

Fdc 99

Row 1 – 31: ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Neck hole

Mark the middle of row 31 with a stitch marker, that’s 50th st from the left and right.

Row 32: ch 2, turn. Dc in next 48 sts, dc2tog in the last 2 sts (the last st is where the stitch marker is placed).

Row 33: ch 2, turn. Dc2tog, dc across.

Row 34: ch 2, turn. Dc across, dc2tog in the last 2 sts.

Repeat rows 33 and 34 until row 45.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Left side of the neck hole

Attach the yarn in the 50th st from the left side (where the stitch marker is and where you made a dc2tog for the right side of the neck hole.

Row 32: ch 2, turn. Dc2tog, dc across.

Row 33: ch 2, turn. Dc across, dc2tog in the last 2 sts.

Row 34: ch 2, turn. Dc2tog, dc across.

Repeat rows 33 and 34 until row 45.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Back panel

Fdc 99

Mark 50th st from the left and right side with a stitch marker. That is the last st for the right side of the back.

Right half of the back panel

Row 1 – 45: ch 2, turn. Dc in next  50 sts.

Row 46: ch 2, turn. Dc until 10 sts remain, hdc, sc, sl st.

Row 47: no ch 1, turn. Sk the 1st st, sl st in next 6 sts, sc (mark it with a stitch marker), hdc, dc across.

Row 48: ch 2, turn. Dc until 10 sts remain (the marked sc from row 47 is the 10th st) hdc, sc, sl st.

Finish off.

Left half of the back panel

Attach the yarn in the 50th st of fdc (where you placed the stitch marker for the right side of the back panel):

Row 1: ch 2, dc across starting in the stitch where you attached the yarn.

Row 2 – 45: ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 46: no ch 1, sk 1st st,  sl st in next 7 sts, no ch 1, sc (mark it with a stitch marker), hdc, dc across.

Row 47: ch 2, turn. Dc across until 10 sts remain (the marked sc from row 46 is the 10th st), hdc, sc, sl st.

Row 48: no ch 1, turn. Sk the 1st st, sl st in next 7 sts, no ch 1, sc, hdc, dc across. Sl st in the 1st st of the last row of the right side of the back panel to join the both sides of the back panel.

Finish off.

Assembling

Place the back and the front panel on top of each other with the right sides facing and sew the shoulders with a sl st. Make sure you don’t skip sts. So start with a sl st in the 1st stitch of both panels and then the 2nd st of the both panels… When you reach the last st of the front panel, you are done! Finish off.

Repeat on the other side/shoulder and finish off.

Sleeves

You will be working on body sides. With a stitch marker mark 19th row of front and back panel (count the fdc row too!). With the right side facing you, attach the yarn in the 19th row, ch 1  and work 2 scs in each dc row across.

For row 2 place the stitch markers in 15th, st row from the left side of row 1 and from the right side of row 1. This is the part (between yellow stitch markers) where you will be making dc2tog in every st.

Row 2: ch 2, turn. Dc until you reach the yellow stitch marker, dc2tog until you reach the 2nd yellow stitch marker, dc across. When you make 1st and last dc2tog move the stitch marker on the stitch you just made, because for row three you will be making dc2tog between yellow stitch markers again.

Row 3: ch 2, turn. Dc until you reach the stitch marker, dc2tog until you reach the 2nd stitch marker, dc across.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing the sleeve and body sides together.

Sew the sleeves and the body sides together with a sl st.

Neckline

With the right side facing you attach the yarn in the middle of the back side of the neck line where you joined the left and right side of the back panel.

Round 1: ch 1 (counts as a stitch), sk 1st st, sl st evenly across and join with a sl st in ch 1.

Round 2: ch 1 (counts as a stitch), sk 1st st, blo sl st across and join with sl st in ch 1.

Finish off.

Bottom body edge

With right side facing and with a 3 mm hook attach the yarn on the center of the back panel’s bottom edge.

Round 1: Ch 1 (counts as a st), sk 1st st, sl st evenly along the edge. Sl st into 1st ch to join, turn.

Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as a st), turn, sk 1st st, blo sl st in each st around, sl st into 1st ch to join. Finish off.

  1. I absolutely love how this turned out and love how it fits. My daughter does too. The pattern is so easy to follow. I added the reversible edge stitch to the back opening with one size smaller hook as well, so that it sat straighter and matched the sleeve edges. The top is very comfortable and it can be worn as a casual look or dressed up. It is such a versatile top. It will compliment any age and any body type since you can customize the length and the width of the sleeves and top itself to hug the body or wear loosely. Love her patterns for how easy they are to follow.

  2. I was fortubate to be a tester for this pattern before its release. I found it to be very well written. If any issue wad found weather it be someone needing a little more guidance or a suggestion for the pattern Karmen was very supportive. My garment was made true to size in the pattern by following the pattern. I really enjoyed creating my top and working with Karmen.
