I designed this top with a crochet shell stitch. It’s a very easy two piece construction that’s sewn together after.
It’s beginner friendly, super stylish and simple to make.

- YARN: DROPS LOVES YOU 7; yarn group A; 100% cotton;
- Hook: 4 mm/G-6, 3 mm/D-3
- Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape

Specialty Stitch & Technique Key
Chain multiple of 6, plus 2
Row 1: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1sc. *Skip two chains, work 5dc into the next chain space. Skip two chains, 1sc into the next chain. Repeat from * across the row ending with 1sc into the final chain. Ch2 and turn.
Row 2: Starting in the first stitch, work 3dc. *Skip 2 stitches, work 1sc in the next stitch. Skip the next 2dc, 5dc in the next sc stitch. Repeat from * across the row, ending with 3dc in the final stitch. Ch1 and turn.
Row 3: Starting in the first stitch, work 1sc. *Skip 2 stitches, work 5dc into the sc, skip 2 stitches, work 1sc into the next stitch. Repeat from * across ending with 1sc into the top of the turning chain, ch2 and turn.
REPEAT ROWS 2 and 3.
Notes
- The top is made of two panels (front and back).
- Ch2 never counts as a stitch.
- Crochet from bottom to top.
Instructions
Front and back panel (make 2)
With a 4 mm hook ch 158.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sk2, 5dc, sk2, *sc, sk2, 5dc, sk2* repeat across, finishing with a sc in the last st.
Row 2: ch2, turn. 3dc in 1st st, sk2, *sc, sk2, 5dc, sk2* repeat across, finishing with 3dc in the last st.
Row 3: ch1, turn. Sc in 1st st, sk2, 5dc, sk2, *sc, sk2, 5dc, sk2* repeat across, finishing with a sc.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until row 52.
Row 53: with a 3 mm hook ch1 and turn. *Slst, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc* repeat across.
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing (20 cm/8″).
Assembling
You will sew the sleeves and the neck hole in 4 places. 1st three sts from the left and from the right side edge – slst in these three sts.
The neck hole is 26 cm / 10,2 inches. Make 4 slsts to sew the shoulders together.
On the bottom edge you will be making slsts to reach the waist width 44 cm / 17,3 inches.
