Specialty Stitch & Technique Key

Almond Stitch

Start with any multiple of 8 + 5. It is first worked in groups of 4 slip stitches and then 4 half double crochets. You repeat the same sequence for 2 rows, then you switch for the next 2 rows.

Row 1: slst in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch. *hdc in each of next 4 ch, slst in each of next 4 ch*. Repeat from * to * across.

Row 2: ch 1, turn. Working in the back loops only in every row from now on make 1 slst blo in each of first 4 sts, *make 1 hdc blo in each of next 4 sts, make 1 slst blo in each of next 4 sts*. Repeat from * to * across.

Row 3: ch 1, turn. Make 1 hdc blo in each of first 4 sts, *make 1 slst blo in each of next 4 sts, make 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts*. Repeat from * to * across.

Row 4: repeat row 2.

Rows 5 and beyond: repeat rows 1- 4 until your desired length.

Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch

Yo, insert hook into indicated st, yo and draw up a loop. Then pull that same loop you just drew up through both loops on your hook to complete the stitch.

Notes

  • The hat is worked vertically, starting with a foundation chain. You’ll alternate slip stitches (slst), half double crochets (hdc) – almond stitch, and half double crochet slip stitches (hdcss) – for the band, in rows, working back and forth until you reach the required number of rows for your chosen size.
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch
  • To adjust the circumference, simply add or remove 4 rows. The total number of rows must be divisible by 4 to maintain the stitch pattern consistency. So instead of 68, you can make 64, 72…
  • I recommend you watch my YouTube tutorial, if there are any uncertainties.
