I wasn’t quite finished with the granny square from my Boheme Granny Dress.

After making the dress, I kept thinking about how much I liked that stitch pattern and what else I could do with it. A sweater felt like the perfect next project. This time, I used just two colors - Buttercream and Nude Pink - and let the pink bring out the pattern as each square grew.

From granny squares to a sweater

The Boheme Sweater begins with four granny squares: one for the front, one for the back, and one for each sleeve. The front and back have openings for the neckline. Once the squares are finished, they’re joined at the shoulders, sleeves, and sides, with ribbing at the waist and a simple finish around the neck.

That’s the part I enjoy most about this design. You start with a familiar shape, and then one day you hold up the joined pieces and realize you’re looking at a sweater.

Two ways to wear the sleeves

I made the sleeves long and added drawstrings so you can decide how you want to wear them. Weave a drawstring through the fabric right at the hem, and the sleeve gathers into a soft cuff. Or weave it about 10 cm (4 in) above the hem, leaving the fabric below to flare out like a little bell.

Try both placements when your sweater is finished. It’s such a small change, but it gives the sleeves a different feel.

Yarn and materials

For my sweater, I used Katech 100% cotton sport-weight yarn in Buttercream and Nude Pink, approximately 350 g / 875 m (12.3 oz / 957 yd) in total, with a 3.5 mm hook. You’ll also need a yarn needle, scissors, a measuring tape, and stitch markers.

You can choose another yarn if you’d like. I recommend making a swatch to find a hook size that gives you a fabric you enjoy wearing. The amount of yarn you need will depend on your size.

Make it fit you

This is a made-to-measure design, so you’ll grow the squares with your own measurements and preferred fit in mind. The written pattern guides you through choosing the size of your granny squares and adjusting the sweater for your body.

YouTube tutorial

If you like to see each step as you crochet, you can watch the Boheme Sweater tutorial on YouTube. I’ll show you how I make my version, from crocheting the squares and joining the sweater to adding the finishing details. For guidance on calculating your own square sizes, keep the written pattern beside you as you watch.

If you made the dress, I’d love to know what you think of seeing its granny square in a sweater. And if this is your first Boheme project, tell me: would you wear the sleeves gathered at the cuffs or with little bells at the ends?
