You can use any yarn weight or fiber type for this pattern. Choose what works best for your dog's needs (washability, warmth, etc.) and adjust your hook size to match your yarn.
- 70 g / 2.5 oz (for Maltese size)
Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, and stitch markers
Hook
- 9 esc sts x 8 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in)
You do not need to match this gauge. Since this is a made-to-measure pattern, you'll adjust the sizing based on your dog's measurements regardless of gauge.
You'll use these measurements to customize the sweater as you work through the pattern.
- Neck circumference (measure where a collar would sit)
- Chest circumference (widest part around ribcage)
- Length from base of neck to a few cm before tail
- Distance between front legs
- Front leg circumference
This is a made-to-measure pattern—measurements will vary based on your dog's size.
- ch = chain
- esc = extended single crochet
- esc2tog = extended single crochet 2 stitches together
- sc = single crochet
- sc blo = single crochet back loop only
- st = stitch
- slst = slip stitch
- sts = stitches
Extended single crochet
- Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.
Extended single crochet 2 stitches together (esc2tog)
- Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through remaining 3 loops.

- The sample shown is sized for a Maltese.
- You will work the cowl neck flat, then join it to form a tube. You will then work the body in joined rounds, leaving holes for the leg openings. You will continue on the chest while narrowing the back section. Finally, you will add ribbing at the bottom of the sweater and around the leg openings.
- Ch 1 doesn't count as a stitch.
