This cardigan features a relaxed fit with an oversized look, making it perfect for layering. The extended half double crochet (ehdc) stitch creates a thick, cozy fabric, while the herringbone single crochet (hsc) stitch adds a touch of texture to the ribbing on the cuffs, bottom edge, and plackets. The cardigan also includes stylish button closures on the front, making it both functional and fashionable.

Specialty Stitch

Extended Half Double Crochet

  • Yo, insert your hook, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through one loop, yo and pull through the remaining three loops.

Herringbone Single Crochet

  • Begin with any number of chains.
  • Row 1 (working in the back bumps of the chain): sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, insert the hook in the left leg of the sc just made and through the back bump of the next ch and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all three loops on the hook. Continue working herringbone single crochet (hsc) across.
  • Row 2: ch 1, turn. Sc blo in the 1st st, insert the hook into the left leg of the sc just made and through the back loop of the next st and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all three loops on the hook. Continue working herringbone single crochet through the back loop (hsc blo) across.
  • Repeat row 2 until you reach the desired size.
Notes
  • You will start by working the back panel, followed by left and right front panels, and sleeves, starting from the bottom and working up. Once the panels and the sleeves are complete, you will join them together by sewing the shoulders together and the sleeves and the body sides. You will finish by making a ribbing on the bottom edge and on the plackets.
  • This pattern uses intarsia crochet. Intarsia crochet involves using separate yarn bobbins or small balls for each color block, ensuring that yarn is not carried across the back of the work. Follow the color chart carefully and manage yarn changes neatly to maintain a clean finish.
  • At the end of each row ch 2 and turn.
  • Ch 2 doesn’t count as a stitch.
  • Working holding two strands of yarn. This is requirement, if you want to make the cardigan exactly as the pattern, because some color changes include holding one strand of one color and the second strand in a different color (A+B, A+C and A+D).
