The Mini Cupcake Skirt is everything I want in a playful warm-weather piece: ruffles, ease, and just enough structure to make it feel polished. Pair it with the Cupcake Top for a pop of color.

It’s got built-in shaping for the hips, a soft ribbed waistband, and is worked top-down in spiral rounds. It’s beginner-friendly and quick to make, with a hidden drawstring and easy-to-adjust fit. The pattern includes instructions for customizing the waist, hips, and length.

Herringbone Single Crochet

Begin with any number of chains.

  • Row 1 (working in the back bumps of the chain): Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Insert hook into the left leg of the sc just made and through the back bump of the next ch, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook. Continue herringbone single crochet (hsc) across.
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc blo in 1st st. Insert hook into the left leg of the sc just made and through the back loop of the next st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops. Continue herringbone single crochet through the back loop (hsc blo) across.

Repeat Row 2 until desired size.

Invisible Half Double Crochet Decrease

  • Yo (as for a regular hdc).
  • Insert hook into FLO of next st.
  • Insert hook into FLO of the following st.
  • (You now have 3 loops: the original yo + 2 front loops)
  • Yo again, pull through all loops on hook.
Notes
  • First, you’ll crochet the waistband and join the ends. Then you’ll work the body in spiral rounds, gradually increasing for shape. Once it fits over the hips, you’ll continue without increases. Finish with a ruffle section at the bottom, and make a drawstring to weave through the waistband.
  • The pattern includes instructions for customizing the waist, hips, and length to suit your fit and style.
  • For hdc2tog make invisible hdc2tog.
