Alpine Stitch Hoodie

Some stitches completely change when you add a second color.

I first used this two-color Alpine Stitch combination for the Alpine Winter Set, and I loved how it turned out. The contrasting colors made the raised texture much more visible and gave a familiar stitch an entirely different look.

It was too beautiful to leave it there.

I wanted to see how the same stitch would look across a full garment, so I used it again to create the Alpine Stitch Hoodie.

Letting the Stitch Become the Design

The Alpine Stitch already has a rich, raised texture, but alternating black and light pink makes every detail stand out. One color forms the background while the other brings the textured stitches forward.

Because the stitch itself creates so much interest, I kept the construction simple. The hoodie has a cropped, oversized body, long balloon sleeves with fitted cuffs, ribbing around the hem, and a relaxed, roomy hood.

The result feels playful and bold, but still very wearable.

Simple Made-to-Measure Construction

The hoodie begins with two rectangles for the front and back panels. The sleeves are worked separately, beginning with fitted ribbed cuffs before continuing into the wider sleeve body.

Once the four pieces are complete, the shoulders are joined, the sleeves are attached, and the side and sleeve seams are sewn. The ribbing is then worked around the bottom edge, and the hood is crocheted directly onto the neckline.

This is a made-to-measure pattern, so you don’t need to choose from a standard size chart. The written instructions guide you through calculating the panel width and adjusting the lengths according to your own measurements and preferred fit.

Yarn and Materials

For my size small, I used approximately 650 g (22.9 oz), or 1,560 m (1,706 yd), of Omoiut Milk Cotton Yarn in black and light pink. It is a sport-weight cotton yarn, and I used a 3.5 mm crochet hook for the entire hoodie.

You can make this design with any yarn. Begin with the hook size recommended on your yarn label, make an Alpine Stitch swatch, and adjust the hook if needed until you create a fabric you like.

The amount of yarn required will vary depending on your measurements, yarn, and chosen length.

Make the Color Combination Your Own

Black and light pink gave my hoodie a strong contrast, but this stitch opens up so many possibilities.

You could choose two bold colors for a statement piece, combine a bright shade with a neutral, or use two similar tones for a softer version. The contrast between the colors will affect how clearly the Alpine Stitch texture appears, making every hoodie feel a little different.
