Alpine Dress is a cozy oversized crochet sweater dress with puff sleeves and a soft cowl neck. Worked in panels with ribbed edges, it’s simple and beginner-friendly. The alpine stitch gives rich texture and warmth. Adjustable length and roomy sleeves make it perfect for layering with tights, leggings, or under a winter coat—stylish and snug for cold days.

Gauge

This design uses two gauges: alpine stitch for the body and sleeves, and sc blo for the ribbing. Make a swatch for both to ensure your tension is correct in each section.

Body and sleeves (alpine stitch); 7 mm hook

  • 9 sts x 10 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in)

For swatch:

  • Row 1: ch 15, dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and across. (13)
  • Row 2: ch 1, turn. Sc across. (13)
  • Row 3: ch 2, turn. *fpdc (in 1st row of dcs here and across), dc*; repeat from * to * to the last 2 sts, dc 2. (13)
  • Row 4: ch 1, turn. Sc across. (13)
  • Row 5: ch 2, turn. *dc, fpdc*, repeat from * to * to the last st, dc. (13)
  • Row 6: ch 1, turn. Sc across. (13)
  • Repeat rows 3–6 to continue the pattern.

Your swatch is larger than the 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) gauge so you can measure only the center. Edges distort tension, and measuring the middle gives the most accurate gauge for sizing.

Ribbing (sc blo); 5 mm hook

  • 13 sts x 14 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in)

Notes
  • This pattern includes a full video tutorial linked on the front page for steps that are easier to show than tell.
  • The dress is worked in two panels, front and back, with separate sleeves. After sewing the shoulders, you will attach the sleeves to the panels, and finish by adding the hem ribbing and cowl neck.
  • This design is meant to fit oversized, with a wide bust and long sleeves. The finished dress length falls at mid-thigh, though you can adjust it to any length. Keep in mind that extra yarn will be needed for added length.
  • Odd-numbered rows on the “Body” and “Sleeve Body” are worked on the right side (RS).
  • The turning chain does not count as a stitch in this pattern.
  • Both the dress length and sleeve length are adjustable, with instructions included in the pattern.
