Granny Stitch

  • Row 1: ch a multiple of 3, plus 1. Work 2 dc into the 4th ch from the hook (the sk ch counts as a dc), sk 2 chs, *work 3 dc into the next chain, sk 2 chs, rep from * across until you have 1 ch left, work 1 dc into the last ch.
  • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a dc here, and throughout), and turn. 2 dc into the sp in between the previous rows single dc and first cluster, *sk the next 3 dc (cluster), work 3 dc into the next sp in between clusters, rep from * across until the last sp is worked into, dc into the top ch of the turning ch.

Repeat the last row.

Notes
  • This pattern includes a full video tutorial linked on the front page for steps that are easier to show than tell.
  • You’ll start with the waistband, then work the hips in joined rounds, followed by the crotch and legs—also worked in joined rounds.
  • At the end, you’ll weave a crocheted chain through the waistband to help secure the shorts at your waist.
  • These pants include special shaping at the back to make them more comfortable and better fitting. 4 rounds are added to the back hip area to create more depth. This helps the pants sit higher in the back, giving you more room and preventing them from riding down when you move or sit.
  • At the end of each granny stitch round, don’t cut the yarn—just drop it and pick it back up when it’s time to use it again. You’ll alternate rounds in this order: yarn A, then yarn B, then yarn C, and repeat—A, B, C.
  • Ch 3 counts as a stitch.
  • The pattern includes tips and instructions to help you customize the fit of the pants to your body.
  • Leg length is shorter because after finishing the pants, you’ll block and stretch them—this sets the shape and size. They would stretch naturally over time anyway, but blocking locks in the final length right away so they don’t stretch further later.
